One of the historical periods I swore to never get involved with, thanks to the fascinating book Rubicon by Tom Holland and the TV series Rome, I am now obsessed with ancient military history. To create armies for the rule-sets my collecting has taken a new direction, namely Ancients. I plan on expanding the number to 9 in due course, but I want to fully finish the six I have before going the whole hog. It’s been two months since I purchased these and I’m currently about one-third of the way through the first of six. For storage purposes I am adopting a modular format – each rectangular piece is 30cm x 40cm and are in fact corkboard notice boards from Wilkinsons. The book caters for most time periods up to WW2, and even the latter’s rules do not cover aircraft or naval aspects.įor a battlefield I am currently in the process of constructing a rocky desert-esque plain as a set battle area. These rules are very basic and are ripe for expansion and customisation (as an old Warhammer 40k player I was disturbed by the brutal simplicity of Thomas’ book).I’m going to give the rules a go once I have relevant armies in place. I got this in late November last year and have been restructuring my collection to adhere to its basic gaming requirements. But Games Workshop’s behemoth isn’t the be-all and end-all of wargaming - many of the best miniatures games are simply less widely-known than 40K or Age of Sigmar. The basic game mechanics in this book will hopefully provide a good framework for my model collection, so I can actually use them on a tabletop battlefield.
